Meta’s Profits Surpass Expectations In Q1

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram – Meta, has reported a profit of $5.7bn (£4.6bn) for the first quarter of this year, surpassing expectations for a period in which many jobs were cut.

Meta’s Profits Surpass Expectations In Q1

Analysing the success story, Meta said artificial intelligence (AI) was “driving good results” across its business, BBC reports.

Total revenue was $28.6bn, while the number of people on Facebook every month rose to just under three billion.

“Our community continues to grow,” said chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

“We’re also becoming more efficient so we can build better products faster, and put ourselves in a stronger position to deliver our long-term vision,” he said.

‘No longer behind in building AI’

Meta sees “an opportunity to introduce AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful,” Mr Zuckerberg told investors.

While offering few details, he said that Meta was “exploring chat experiences in WhatsApp and Messenger, visual creation tools for posts in Facebook and Instagram and ads, and over time video and multimodal experiences as well.”

The company intends to commercialise its privately-run generative AI, joining Google in finding practical applications for the tech – because the industry is awash with hype around its capabilities.

Meta established Facebook’s AI Research laboratory in 2013, but has not made big inroads in this area yet, as some other big tech firms – such as Microsoft – have done.

But Mr Zuckerberg insisted Meta was “no longer behind in building our AI infrastructure” and said generative AI Meta products, which can instantly create sentences and graphics, would be released in the coming months.

He added the move would not be at the cost of the metaverse, Meta’s virtual reality project.

Meta’s Reality Labs division reported a net loss of $4bn last quarter, and the company said it expected “operating losses to increase year over year in 2023”.

However, Mr Zuckerberg said the “narrative that has developed that Meta is moving away from the metaverse” was “not accurate”, adding it still planned to reveal the next Quest VR headset later this year.

Cost-cutting pays off

The positive financial figures coincide with a period where Meta has slashed jobs and projects. The aim was to turn 2023 into “a year of efficiency,” said Mr Zuckerberg.

Meta has been the most aggressive US big tech firm when it comes to downsizing, shedding almost a quarter of its global workforce, more than 20,000 jobs, in just a few months.

“The year of efficiency is off to a stronger than expected start for Meta,” said Insider Intelligence principal analyst, Debra Aho Williamson.

“In this economic environment – and after the disaster that was 2022 – 3% year over year revenue growth is an accomplishment,” she added.

Mr Zuckerberg has called 2022 “a humbling wake-up call” and said it would be wise to “prepare ourselves for the possibility that this new economic reality will continue for many years”.

Ben Barringer, from investment management firm Quilter Cheviot, said: “You have to take your hat off to Mark Zuckerberg and Meta given the transformation of the business over the last six months.

“The ‘year of efficiency’ Zuckerberg likes to talk about is bearing fruit. These results are a strong beat on the expectations and, given the improving macro backdrop, Meta should continue to recover well.” (BBC)

About 8 Million Children Are Out-of-school In Nigeria

Benin, Nigeria – The Nigerian education minister, Adamu Adamu, has said that Nigeria accounts for 12.4 per cent of the out-of-school children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The minister disclosed this on Thursday in Benin during activities to mark the Edo government’s 2023 ‘Education Week’.

“Our education challenge is an open secret; out of 258 million out-of-school children worldwide, an estimated 62 million are in Sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria is said to account for 12.4 per cent of the out-of-school children in sub-Saharan Africa,” he said.

The minister said the 2018 National Personnel Audit estimated that 10.5 million children aged five to 14 were not in school, adding that the figure was worsened by the increased learning poverty caused by the closure of schools and non-return of children to school following the COVID-19 pandemic, NAN reports.

To ensure access to quality basic education for the Nigerian child, Mr Adamu said the June 12 presidential declaration on the enforcement of free and compulsory basic education for the first nine years of schooling underscored Nigeria’s commitment to achieving Universal Basic Education (UBE) as enshrined in the UBE Act of 2004.

He listed the strategic programmes to achieve the federal government commitment to include the Better Education Service Delivery (BESDA), Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), IDEAS Programme, and the Transforming Education Systems at State Level (TESS).

“Education is one of the most important investments a country can make in its future. It is a powerful agent of change which improves health, livelihoods, contributes to social stability and drives long-term economic growth,” Mr Adamu stated. “The return on investment in education is very high. Therefore, there must be no compromise on quality.”

He stressed that a major policy priority for the medium-term national development plan remains to improve access to quality education in the country.

The minister, however, commended the Edo government for improving the education sector and charged other states to follow suit.

FG: Over 3M Nigerians Live In Sudan

Abuja, Nigeria – The federal government of Nigeria says there are currently more than three million Nigerians living in Sudan, the northern African country at the verge of a civil war caused by two warring army generals.

FG: Over 3M Nigerians Live In Sudan

Ms Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairwoman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), disclosed in Abuja on Thursday, that the number of Nigerians living in the war-ravaged country are over three million, during the weekly ministerial briefing organised by the presidential communications team.

As per NAN reports and according to the NIDCOM boss, over three million Nigerians reside in Sudan, and efforts are being made to evacuate as many as possible from the country if the war persists.

When we were talking about diaspora voting, some people were saying when we do that, it may not augur well. But we said no, we need to go to places like Sudan where we have millions of Nigerians who migrated there years ago, and they have relationships and businesses there,” stated Ms Dabiri-Erewa.

Ms Dabiri-Erewa, however, maintained that priority would be on children, students and women, adding that 13 buses had departed Sudan for the Egyptian border Aswan, where the returnees would be airlifted to Nigeria.

The government official said over 5,500 Nigerian students in Sudan would be among the first Nigerian nationals to be evacuated.

“We have some buses that have departed from the African International University in Khartoum, Sudan, and as I speak, I think they are just about two hours away from Aswan in Cairo,” stated Ms Dabiri-Erewa.

The NIDCOM chair added, “Others departed from the Elrazi University also in Khartoum. All in all, 13 buses have departed for the Aswan border in Egypt, where they will be received by the Nigerian ambassador there and the director-general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Habib Ahmed, who is already there with some officials.”

Kaduna, Nigeria – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says knives-wielding candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) candidates threatened JAMB officials at a center in Kaduna.

JAMB: UTME Candidates Threaten Officials With Knives

According to reports credited to NAN, the allegation followed reports, that many candidates at the Christ Ambassadors College, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna Centre, could not sit for the exam due to technical hitches.

The JAMB supervisor at the centre, Balkisu Abdullahi, explained that the server could not accommodate 250 computers simultaneously, as planned.

The JAMB official accused the candidates’ parents of being unhelpful amid the threats of violence.

“The situation on Tuesday was terrifying as some of the candidates were wielding knives and threatening us when we were explaining the technical hitches and what we intended doing to remedy the situation,” the JAMB supervisor alleged.

She advised parents to guide and teach their children good manners, saying that coming to examinations with knives was unacceptable.

“The parents did not also help the issue when rather than calming their children, some of them were shouting at the top of their voice, threatening to take legal action against JAMB,” stated Ms Abdullahi.

Ms Abdullahi said candidates who missed the examination on the first and second days were asked to submit their examination slips to enable JAMB to reschedule their examination to another day.

The JAMB supervisor stated she regretted the technical hitches, adding that JAMB was working with the centre management to address the issue, just as she assured parents that no candidate would miss the examination.

The Christ Ambassadors College manager, Tosin Akinpeloye, explained that the technical hitches occurred because of a JAMB server upgrade to work well on computers with Co i7 processors.

Ms Akinpeloye said the school’s computer centre had 260 laptops and 20 desktop computers running on Co i5 processors.

“I assure you that all the candidates that will write the examination on Thursday will do so without a hitch,” she said.

The situation was, however, different at Kaduna State University centre, where the JAMB coordinator, Benedict Opke, said the facilities were working perfectly and the candidates were well-behaved.

One of the candidates at the centre, 15-year-old Favour Bamigboye, who wants to become a doctor, said the examination went smoothly without a hitch.

Similarly, some candidates who wrote the examination at Queen Amina College centre commended JAMB and the school management for a hitch-free exercise.

“This is the first time I am writing the UTME, and I am impressed because everything went smoothly,” one of the candidates at the centre, Hafsat Abubakar, said.

Kenya Cult Deaths Hits 90, Says Minister

On Tuesday, the death toll at a ranch in coastal Kenya that is owned by a pastor who is accused of leading a religious cult and ordering his followers to starve themselves has reached ninety (90).

To that end, the country’s interior minister has announced an expanded operation at the site to ensure no more deaths are recorded in that regard.

The new figure came after police exhumed 17 more bodies. The total number of those rescued while starving at the ranch now stands at 34.

The Kenya Red Cross Society’s latest figure on the number of missing is 213.

Pastor Paul Makenzi, who heads the Good News International Church, is accused of luring his followers to the ranch near the town of Malindi. He allegedly told them to fast to death in order to meet Jesus before burying them in shallow graves spread across his land. He was arrested after police raided the property earlier this month, and he remains in police custody.

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki said that the security team will “upscale search and rescue missions to save as many lives as possible.”

“The entire 800-acre (320-hectare) parcel of land that is part of the Shakahola ranch is hereby declared a disturbed area and an operation zone,” Kindiki said while visiting the area.

The minister said there would be a turning point on how the country handles threats caused by religious extremism and was looking into another suspected cult in the same Kilifi county.

“We have cast the net wider to another religious organization here in Kilifi. We have opened a formal inquiry on this religious group and we are getting crucial leads that perhaps what was being done by Makenzi is a tip of the iceberg,” Kindiki said.

The teams digging at the site have been finding decomposed bodies buried in mass and single graves marked with a cross.

Those believed to be living in mudwalled houses inside the ranch have been fleeing from

rescue teams, and mostly those who can’t walk or talk have been rescued so far.

The Mombasa-based Muslims for Human Rights Group called on the government “to consider the option of using aerial surveillance by use of helicopters to rescue more people and make the process quicker.”

The autopsies on the bodies are set to begin on Thursday with local media reporting that government morgues in Kilifi are filled to capacity.

These are Kenya’s worst recorded cult deaths.

The broadcast regulator, Kenya Film and Classification Board sounded the alarm in 2017 on radicalization-like content by Makenzi on television. The board’s former chairperson, Ezekiel Mutua, told local media that the content was taken off air at the time and law enforcement agencies were notified.

The pastor had been arrested twice before — in 2019 and in March of this year — in relation to the deaths of children. Each time, he was released on bond, and both cases are still proceeding through the court system.

The interior minister likened the cult deaths to one run by U.S. preacher Jim Jones, whose 900 followers took poison in a mass suicide in 1978.

Other cult activities that ended up in mass deaths include Uganda’s Kanungu cult massacre which killed 700 followers in 2000. (Africanews/AP)

Ibadan: Police Officer Feared Dead, Journalist Nabbed, As Yahoo Boys Evade Arrest

0

Ibadan, Nigeria – A yet-to-be identified police officer has been reportedly shot dead during a clash with internet fraudsters (Yahoo Boys) in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

2 Men Arrested Over Found Body Of Missing Petrol Attendant

“As those Yahoo boys were held in a traffic jam in the Moniya Garage area, a policeman shot at them but his shot was misfired causing him serious injury which later led to his death.”, narrated an eyewitness who pleaded anonymous, according to Daily Independent reports.

Economic activities, as at the time of filling these reports, in the community have been paralyzed as a result of the incident.

It was observed that some okada riders were in the area when some policemen on stop and search duty along Ijaye-Iseyin Road were chasing some suspected yahoo boys who refused to wait on policemen’s orders

The eyewitness who also confirmed the incident said that those Yahoo boys later escaped unhurt from the scene. The Policemen in an attempt to scare the onlookers and also to calm down the situation started firing gunshots and tear gas canisters into the air and in the process one old man was hit by a stray bullet but it has not been confirmed if he’s dead or alive.

The eyewitnesses, who are mostly Okada riders, lamented the alleged assault and extortion by policemen in the area.

They said, “In most cases, these policemen always extort us, harass us, mistake us and our innocent customers for Yahoo boys, it is sad this is happening and it’s not new here.”

However, a reporter of Silverbird Television, John Alabi who was at the scene was arrested and assaulted by policemen. Though the state Commissioner of Police, CP. Adebowale Williams has ordered a discreet investigation into the arrest of the journalist.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP. Adewale Osifeso, through a press statement, confirmed the incident.

Osifeso in a copy of the statement made available to Daily Independent stated “Today, being Tuesday 25/04/2023 at about 1015hrs, operatives attached to Moniya Area Command under the Oyo State Police Command while on lawful intelligence led Stop and Search around a Major Black-spot were attacked in the line of duty.

“Preliminary Investigation reveals that the Patrol team while acting on credible intelligence through visible policing duties extended their presence around major black spots, highways and major roads under Akinyele Local Government Area Axis in a bid to deter criminal elements from settling and establishing dominance within the location.

In furtherance of the above, the team of operatives on patrol led by one Inspr Stanley Ikhine, flagged-down an Ash Lexus 350 Jeep with a faintly inscribed worn-off number further arousing suspicion from the Officers on watch.

In the process, the vehicle initially slowed down in compliance with the directive before eventually picking up speed and dashing off to evade the officers on duty.

This action led to a chase by the officers in a bid to establish further clarity of facts.

A few meters away from the initial stoppage point, the Lexus Jeep veered off the road to a nearby garage, driving directly into the waiting hands of hoodlums who were also collaborators in the criminal process, thereby not only obstructing the officers from discharging their duties but as well aiding the escape of the SUV and its Occupants.

Consequent on the above, the hoodlums attacked the Officers unprovoked and attempted forcefully dragging a rifle from one of the officers which led to a shot being discharged from the barrel during the process of the struggle.

Sadly, the gallant officer paid the supreme price, suffering a heavy blow to his skull inflicted by one of the hoodlums while preventing them from dispossessing him of his firearm.

The body of the deceased had since been deposited at the state Morgue for Post-mortem while Seven persons had been arrested alongside 12 Motorcycles impounded in connection with the incident.

In another development, while re-iterating the Command’s respect and cordiality for the Fourth Members of the Estate of the Realm, the CP has ordered discreet investigation into circumstances that led to the arrest of Mr John Alabi, the Oyo State Correspondent of Silverbird Television who was allegedly apprehended by operatives in the heat of the Incident.

Ultimately, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (DC SCID) was assigned to take over the case for detailed investigations.

6.2m Children Are Unvaccinated In Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – An estimated 6.2 million Nigerian children are unvaccinated because of the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic from 2019 to 2021, says the World Health Organisation (WHO).

This was disclosed by Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, in Abuja on Tuesday at a news conference to celebrate the African Vaccination Week (AVW) and World Immunisation Week, NAN reports.

“We acknowledge current efforts by the government for an 83 per cent reduction in circulating Variant Polio Virus type 2. “Also a significant feat in sustaining certification for the eradication of Wild Polio Virus in Nigeria,’’ she said.

Ms Moeti said an estimated 33 million children would need to be vaccinated in Africa between 2023 and 2025.

According to her, such will put the continent back on track to achieve the 2030 global immunisation goals, including reducing morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases.

“In the Africa region, WHO estimates show that the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine immunization services has driven up the number of zero-dose and under-immunised children,” stated the official.

Ms Moeti added, “The effect causes rising by 16 per cent between 2019 and 2021 and pushing the cumulative total (2019–2021) to around 33 million, which represents nearly half the global estimate. In Nigeria, WHO estimates that in 2019 to 2021, 6.2 million children are zero doses, a consequence of the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

According to her, reaching these children will require renewed and intensified efforts by governments and partners.

Ms Moeti explained that to galvanise the commitments required, WHO conducted a high-level event during the African Union Summit in February 2023.

“At the summit, African Heads of State endorsed a declaration aimed at revamping and scaling up routine immunisation across the continent. Also, to implement urgent measures to address persistent bottlenecks in vaccine and health care delivery systems,’’ she said.

The regional director said the day was a global push by WHO and partners to intensify efforts to reach children who missed vaccinations and restore and strengthen routine immunisation programmes.
