Mr Ehanire, represented by Gloria Uzo-Igwe, head of the dentistry division of the federal health ministry, disclosed this at a one-day oral cancer training on Monday in Abuja.

It was also disclosed that the Nigeria records at least 1,146 diagnosed cases of the disease each year, expressing worry that most citizens were not aware of the devastating effect of oral cancer.

To this effect, he said the Nigerian government has set up an oral health policy that will soon be launched in the country to prevent the high rate of oral cancer, also called oral cavity cancer, which develops in any part of the mouth.

The minister said the new policy will ensure that health workers are deployed to rural areas where they can recognize early signs of oral cancer and refer the patients to the hospitals where dentists can give treatment.

The policy is targeted at being able to map at least 50 percent of the population in the rural areas, the official added.

According to the World Health Organization, the risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and human papillomavirus infection.

Oral cancer is also called oral cavity cancer and develops in any part of the mouth. Its symptoms include a sore that doesn’t heal, a lump or a white or red patch on the inside of the mouth.

India is now the world’s most populous nation, having a total population of 1.4286 billion, according to a data released by the United Nations.

The country latest record has slightly overtaken China, which has 1.4257 billion people, although China’s numbers did not include Hong Kong and Macau, special administrative regions of China, and Taiwan.

According to the new report, 25 per cent of India’s population is in the age group of 0-14 years, 18 per cent in the 10 to 19 age group, 26 per cent in the age bracket of 10 to 24 years, 68 per cent in 15 to 64 years age group, and 7 per cent above 65 years.

Likewise, experts’ estimates suggest the country will also be the world’s fastest-growing major economy in the coming years.

The burgeoning population would add urgency for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to create employment for the millions of people entering the workforce as the nation moves away from farm jobs.

India’s population growth has outpaced China’s since 1974.

Asia’s third-largest economy is now home to nearly a fifth of humanity — greater than the entire population of Europe or Africa, or the Americas.

“India’s story is a powerful one. It is a story of progress in education, public health, and sanitation, economic development as well as technological advancements,” said Andrea Wojnar, representative of the United Nations Population Fund.

India seized the top spot as it added about 23 million babies in 2022, while China’s population started shrinking for the first time in six decades, with about 9.56 million newborns last year.

Oshodi admitted the defendant to N20 million bail with two sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties must be the owner of a build-up property in Lagos State and the property must be enough to cover the bail sum.

“The original document of the landed property must be submitted to the chief registrar of Lagos State, Justice Oshodi said. “The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must have three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State”.

The judge also ordered the defendant to deposit his international passport with the chief registrar of the court and ordered accelerated hearing of the case.

Oshodi adjourned the case until May 9 for trial.

According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly committed the offences sometime in June 2020 on Ikota Villa Estate, Lekki, Lagos.

The teenager – Ralph Paul Yarl, 16, was in critical condition after he was shot twice, once in the head, last Thursday night when he rang the doorbell at the wrong house while trying to pick up his twin brothers from a friend’s home nearby.

Outrage rose over the case throughout the weekend, after it was revealed that the homeowner had been released without charges following 24 hours in custody.

However on Monday, Clay County prosecutor Zachary Thompson announced that the homeowner, identified as Andrew Lester, 85, had been charged with one count of felony assault in the first degree and one count of armed criminal action, also a felony. His bail was set at $200,000.

The boy’s aunt, Faith Spoonmoore, said on a GoFundMe campaign that her nephew was a gifted student who dreamed of studying chemical engineering.

Deadly shootings are a regular occurrence in the United States, a country of around 330 million people that is awash with an estimated 400 million guns.

But Yarl’s case has sparked a particular outcry as the nation continues to grapple with a long history of missing accountability for violence against African Americans.

The White House announced Monday evening that President Joe Biden had spoken by phone to Yarl “and shared his hope for a swift recovery.”

“But as a chief of police, I do recognise the racial components of this case. I do recognise and understand the community’s concern.”

Charges were also filed Monday in a similar case in New York state, though the victim of the shooting Saturday night did not survive.

Police in New York state said a 20-year-old woman, identified as Kaylin Gillis, had been fatally shot by a homeowner on Saturday night when she showed up with three others at the wrong address when trying to find a friend’s house.

“While they were leaving the residence after they determined that they were at the wrong house, the subject came out on his porch for whatever reason and fired two shots, one of which struck the vehicle that Kaylin was in,” said Jeffrey Murphy, the sheriff of Washington County, where the shooting took place.

The 65-year-old homeowner who allegedly fired the shots was arrested Monday and charged with premeditated murder, the sheriff said.

Meanwhile on Saturday in the state of Alabama, four people were killed and at least 28 others, mostly teenagers, were wounded in a shooting at a birthday party. (AFP)
