Latest Report Says ‘Thiefnubu’, ‘Obidiot’ Are Most Mentioned Demeaning Words During Nigeria’s 2023 Election

Abuja, Nigeria – At the course of the 2013 presidential, governorship and both federal as well as state parliamentary elections, some fanatic supporters were reportedly observed to engage with words batter with one another.

Mr. Peter Obi and President Ahmed Tinubu

According to the ‘European Union Election Observation Mission Nigeria 2023 Final Report’ published recently, demeaning words like ‘Thiefnubu’ and ‘Obidiots’ were the most common slurs used by vociferous supporters of the different candidates to describe the opposition.

Online virulence was more potent between then-candidate Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi. Mr Tinubu (the APC flag bearer) was later declared the winner of the February 25 presidential election. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP came second, and Mr Obi came third.

Taking a close look, ‘Obidiot’ got 14,812 mentions and ‘thiefnubu’ 17,924.

‘Thiefnubu’ is a term constantly used by the opposition to refer to Mr Tinubu as a drug lord and other allegations of corruption.

‘Obidiots’, coined from the name of Mr Obi and ‘idiots’, was a derogatory slur used by opposition supporters to describe followers, otherwise known as Obidients, of the former Anambra governor. The demeaning expression suggests that the followers are lapdogs, People Gazette reports.

Other common demeaning words and phrases used on social media platforms during the 2023 election cycle were ‘PDPigs’, ‘Athiefku’, ‘Obingo’ and ‘aboki’.

In the same report, the European Union body listed Messrs Abubakar, Obi, Mr Tinubu, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian People’s Party as the four leading presidential candidates in the February 2023 poll with suspicious followers on social media “used to create a false impression of support.”

The EU said of sampled Twitter accounts that Mr Kwankwaso had 80 per cent dubious followers, Mr Atiku had 60 per cent suspicious followers, and Mr Obi had 23 per cent dubious followers. Mr Tinubu had the least of such followers, with 22 per cent.

“There was a steady increase in the number of followers of key presidential candidates over a period of three months (January – March). During the week of the presidential election, there was a sharp increase in the number of followers for all four candidates,” the final EU observers’ report on Nigeria’s 2023 presidential poll stated.

It added, “It should be noted that a relatively large number of these new followers are suspicious accounts, used to create a false impression of support.”

According to the EU, the accounts could not be identified as suspicious at first glance because they had an original-looking profile name or used a random snippet of a photo used online as a profile picture that could not be directly identified as having already been used (using Google’s reverse image search).

But the report noted that deeper investigation revealed problematic aspects, which were anonymity or high engagement and endorsement of particular people, topics and hashtags

Subsidy Removal: World Bank Projects Nigeria To Save N13trn By 2025

“With the petrol subsidy removal, the government is projected to achieve fiscal savings of approximately N2 trillion in 2023, equivalent to 0.9% of GDP. These savings are expected to reach over N11 trillion by the end of 2025,” the World Bank said.

The global financial institution disclosed this in its June edition of the ‘Nigeria Development Update (NDU)’ report.

Though the World Bank projected that at least N13 trillion would be saved from subsidy reform in three years, it stressed that “compensating transfers will be essential to help shield the most vulnerable Nigerian households from the initial price impacts of the subsidy reform.”

The Washington-based financial institution added, “Without compensation, many households could be pushed into poverty by higher petrol prices and have to resort to coping mechanisms with long-term adverse consequences.”

Mr Tinubu assumed office on May 29, announcing the immediate removal of the petrol subsidy, which saw the petrol pump price skyrocket to N540 from N195. However, the president did not mention plans to cushion the adverse effects on the Nigerian masses.

Plateau, Nigeria – Unknown gunmen have allegedly killed five (5) persons during an attack in the Sohon Kerang community of the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Amidst Curfew: 5 Villagers Killed By Gunmen In Plateau

The deadly attack is coming amidst the curfew the Plateau State Government put in place in a bid to curb insecurity issues within the state.

It was gathered that the suspects, after perpetrating the crime between 5pm and 8pm, fled into the bush, leaving no trace for apprehension, Punch Metro reports.

It was learnt that the attack occurred after gunmen, in a similar manner, attacked neighbouring communities last week and reportedly killed several persons.

Speaking with The Punch’s correspondent on Tuesday, a resident of the Sohon Kerang community, Joseph Kabir, said the slain victims included a yet-to-be-identified man and his wife, adding that all the victims were given a mass burial a day after the attack.

Kabir said, “I can confirm to you that five people including a man and his wife were killed by terrorists between 5pm to 8pm on Monday, June 26, 2023, in the Sohon Kerang community of the Kerang District, Mangu Local Government Area.

“We thought that with the declaration of curfew by the government, security agents will be able to stop the terrorists from killing innocent residents. But the gunmen came to the community which is behind the SWAN Water Company Limited located around 5pm and started firing gunshots which killed the victims.

“They escaped into the bush after carrying out their evil acts. It was this morning that the corpses of the victims were discovered by residents who have been thrown into mourning. The victims were given a mass burial this morning.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, had yet to make a statement regarding the attack as of the time of filing this report.

BURKINA FASO – No fewer than 31 soldiers and three army auxiliaries were killed on Monday in an attack by suspected jihadists in northern Burkina Faso, the army announced on Tuesday, with security sources telling AFP that another separate attack had left dozens dead.

“A supply convoy escorted by military units, returning from Djibo”, a town besieged for months by jihadists in the Sahel region (north), was on Monday “the target of an ambush” in Namsiguia, in the Centre-nord region, according to a Burkina Faso army statement.

“The fighting, which was particularly violent, caused significant casualties, despite the vigorous response of the units,” it added, referring to a “provisional toll” of 31 soldiers and three Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP, civilian army auxiliaries) killed, while “around ten elements are still being sought by reinforcements” dispatched to the scene.

According to the army, “more than forty terrorists have been neutralized”.

The army did not mention in its communiqué another attack in the same region on Monday, which, according to security sources told AFP, also left “dozens dead”, the majority of them VDP.

“Terrorist groups attacked the village of Noaka” in the Centre-Nord region, “mainly targeting VDP”, according to one of these sources.

“We lost dozens of men in Noaka and several are wounded,” said a local VDP official. “Several other fighters are still missing,” he added.

According to a local resident, “it’s a massacre that’s taken place in Noaka”, estimating that “around thirty” VDP were killed in the attack and mentioning “many wounded”. “The valiant fighters, supported by the army, also inflicted a heavy loss on the assailants”, he added, referring to “several motorcycles and weapons recovered”.

The local VDP leader also reported that another, smaller-scale attack had taken place on Monday in Gayeri, in the eastern Komondjari province, killing four army auxiliaries.

The population of Tanwalbougou (east) had demonstrated the same day in response to the upsurge in jihadist attacks, calling for supplies to their locality, which has been blockaded by armed groups for several weeks, according to local residents.

Burkina has been caught since 2015 in a spiral of jihadist violence that began in Mali and Niger a few years earlier and has spread beyond their borders.

Over the past eight years, the violence has left more than 10,000 civilians and soldiers dead, according to NGOs, and more than two million internally displaced.

Since last September, the country has been ruled by a military junta led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who came to power following a coup d’état, the second in eight months. (AFP)
