0

A family in Nyayo Estate in Embakasi, Nairobi is shock when their kin died after a long bout of prayer and fasting.

Police are investigating the incident in which Catherine Mutuku Kibara, 78, was found dead in her house while lying on her bed long after she had been reported missing.

In a police statement, her relatives told police the woman lived alone and it was unusual for her not to pick up calls. On Monday, her relatives were forced to break on her door after she failed to pick up calls and her mobile phone went off.

Her lifeless body was found lying on the bed after the door was broken down. Police who arrived at the scene said they stumbled on a register showing she had been fasting and praying since May 18. Police suspect she died out of starvation.

The exact cause of the woman’s death remains unknown and what happened during those three weeks is also a mystery because no one saw her after she locked herself in her house.

The officers handling the case said they plan to conduct an autopsy on the body to establish how and why she died. The police also said the woman may have even been dead for a few days before her family opened the door, police said.

Fasting (going without food and drink for a period of time) is an ancient practice and some people believe it must have existed among believers from the very beginning.

Catholics might give up an item or two, such as sugar or caffeine, for the 40 days of lent leading up to Easter, but most people do not forgo all meals.

Fasting is also found in the Jewish and Islamic faiths. The most common day of fasting for Jews is Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. Muslims fast during the day during the month of Ramadhan, but they can eat after sunset.

In the Bible, fasting is used during times of mourning, prayer and to repent. Today, Christians mainly use it to get closer to God. (Nairobinews)

The young 17-year-old prospect Gavi has already established himself as a critical player, racking up 47 appearances in all competitions this season for the Catalan giants.

The up-and-coming youngster signed for Barca in 2015 at the age of 11 and was promoted to the senior squad in 2021.

Liverpool were hopeful of getting their hands on the talented youngest, but Gavi has always been keen on signing a new contract with Barca.

Spanish news outlet Sport reports that Liverpool’s pursuit ended when it was discovered that Gavi intends to sign a new deal with Barca, which includes a gigantic €1 billion release clause.

The Reds now turn their interest to popular transfer target and Leeds’ midfielder Kalvin Phillips with Klopp’s Reds having reportedly already begun negotiating a deal to sign Philips, according to Sport.

Phillips remains in contract with Leeds until June 2024, but his popularity this summer could see him move away from his boyhood club Leeds United.

Manchester United and Manchester City have both been keen on signing the midfielder, but things have become more challenging since the Whites managed to stay up in the Premier League.

It has previously been reported by the Daily Mail that the England international would reject a move to Manchester United, but Leeds would listen to offers of around £60million.

Pep Guardiola, who views Phillips as a replacement for Fernandinho, now faces stiff competition to sign the Leeds midfielder from Jurgen Klopp, but who will come out on top, if any?

Tunisia Expert Drafting New Constitution Says no Reference to Islam

Tunis, Tunisia – The man contracted by President Kais Saied with rewriting Tunisia’s constitution said Monday he would present a draft stripped of any reference to Islam in order to fight Islamist parties.

Sadeq Belaid (AFP)

The first article of a constitution adopted three years after the North African country’s 2011 revolution says it is “a free, independent and sovereign state, Islam is its religion and Arabic is its language”.

But Sadeq Belaid, the legal expert appointed last month to head a committee to draft a new constitution, told AFP “80 percent of Tunisians are against extremism and against the use of religion for political ends”.

“That’s exactly what we want to do, simply by erasing Article 1 in its current form,” he said in an interview.

The draft will be presented to Saied ahead of a planned July 25 referendum.

Asked whether there would be any reference to Islam in the new constitution, Belaid said “there won’t be”.

The new constitution is at the heart of Saied’s roadmap for rebuilding Tunisia’s political system, after he sacked the government last July and later dissolved parliament in moves described by rivals as a coup.

Belaid, who once taught Saied and now heads the president’s “National Consultative Commission for a New Republic”, said he would present the new draft by June 15.

The president is then to sign off on the text ahead of a popular vote.

Belaid, 83, said he wanted to tackle Islamist-inspired parties such as Ennahdha.

“If you use religion to engage in political extremism, we will not allow that,” he said.

“We have political parties with dirty hands. Whether you like it or not, French or European democrats, we won’t accept these dirty people in our democracy.”

Many Tunisians have welcomed Saied’s moves against political parties and a mixed presidential-parliamentary system seen as corrupt and inept, but others have warned that he risks scrubbing out the country’s democratic gains over the last decade.

Antiquities Case: Iraq Court Hands British Retiree 15-year Sentence

An Iraqi court on Monday sentenced a British retiree to 15 years’ prison for trying to smuggle antiquities out of the country, but acquitted his German co-accused.

The maximum penalty for the offence is death by hanging but the court decided on a lesser sentence for James Fitton, 66, “because of the advanced age of the accused,” the judge said. Fitton’s lawyer said that he would appeal.

The court found “insufficient evidence” to convict co-accused Volker Waldmann, 60, who was visiting Iraq with Fitton on an organised tour when they were arrested in March at Baghdad airport.

War-ravaged Iraq’s tourism infrastructure is almost non-existent but the country is timidly opening to visitors.

Iraq has also been trying to recover antiquities that were looted over a period of decades from the country whose civilisation dates back thousands of years.

When the judge asked the men whether they were guilty or not guilty “of trafficking antiquities,” each replied: “Not guilty.”

They appeared in court dressed in yellow prisoners’ clothing, but not handcuffed, said an AFP journalist at the hearing.

They were charged under a 2002 law against “intentionally taking or trying to take out of Iraq an antiquity”.

According to statements from customs officers and witnesses, Fitton’s baggage contained about a dozen stone fragments, pieces of pottery or ceramics.

Waldmann, a Berlin psychologist, allegedly had two pieces but at the trial’s opening on May 15 denied they were his.

When the judge asked Fitton why he tried to take the artefacts out of Iraq, he cited his “hobby” and said he did not mean to do anything illegal.

“I didn’t realise that taking them was against the law,” Fitton said, adding that some of the ancient sites were open and unguarded.

In his verdict the judge found that Fitton was “aware” that the location from where he collected the fragments was “an archaeological site” and that it was illegal to take them.

The judge concluded there was criminal intent.

Defence lawyer Thaer Massoud denied this, and called the judgement “extreme”.

In Waldmann’s case the judge accepted the defence argument that the German did not know the pieces from Fitton were antiquities.

The two men were not acquainted before their trip to Iraq.

They heard the verdict two weeks after court had adjourned to allow time for further investigations at the request of Waldmann’s lawyer, Furat Kuba.

“We don’t have any more details: what site do these pieces come from? What era, what civilisation do they date back to?” Kuba said at the time.

Democratic Republic of the Congo President Felix Tshisekedi said Sunday there was no doubt that Rwanda was backing a rebellion on their territory, but insisted he was still seeking peaceful relations with Kigali.

His remarks were just the latest exchange against the background of the resurgence of the M23 rebels active in the east of the country, near the border with Rwanda.

“I have always maintained that you have to build bridges rather than walls,” said Tshisekedi on state television, in his first public remarks on the growing crisis between the two countries.

“Unfortunately, today, we are where we are.” DR Congo’s neighbours should not mistake its desire for peace with weakness, he added.

“That does not constitute an opportunity for neighbours to come and provoke us,” he said.

“I hope that Rwanda has learned this lesson, because, today, it’s clear, there is no doubt, Rwanda has supported the M23 to come and attack the DRC.”

Tshisekedi’s was speaking as he visited Kinshasa’s western neighbour, Congo-Brazzaville, for talks with President Denis Sassou Nguesso.

Kinshasa has accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebels, who have been involved in a series of clashes with the army since the end of May, allegations Kigali has denied.

Kinshasa has suspended flights of Rwandan airline RwandAir between the two countries and summoned Rwanda’s ambassador to warn him of the country’s position.

Relations between the DRC and Rwanda have been strained since Rwandan Hutus accused of slaughtering Tutsis during the 1994 Rwanda genocide arrived in eastern DRC en masse.

The relationship began to thaw after Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi took office in 2019 but the recent resurgence of M23 violence has reignited regional tensions.

M23 fighters captured Goma in 2012 before the army drove them from the city and crushed their rebellion.

However, the militia took up arms again in late 2021 after accusing the government of having failed to respect a 2009 agreement that foresaw incorporating its fighters into the army.

“We see the present zoning decision as a step in the right direction, we are greatly indebted to President Buhari, who not only created an enabling environment for the resolution of the logjam,” stated the so-called Muslim scholars. “But also went ahead to endorse the resolution of the northern governors’ position in the overall interest of unity, peaceful and mutual trust and progress of our nation. We acknowledge this courageous stance for equity and moral rectitude.”

It described the resolution as an uncommon resolve to confront issues militating against the country’s march towards nationhood.
