A 27-year-old defender for Club Nacional has died days after collapsing on the pitch during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo.

Juan Izquierdo, the Uruguayan footballer, who suffered from an irregular heartbeat, had been receiving treatment in a hospital since the incident on August 22.
Nacional announced his death with deep sorrow, stating, “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo.
We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. All of Nacional is in mourning for his irreparable loss.”

Izquierdo was placed on a ventilator on Sunday and had been under neurological care since Monday. The defender had come on as a substitute at halftime for former Liverpool player Sebastian Coates during the match.
He collapsed suddenly in the 84th minute, with no other players near him at the time.
Medical personnel immediately attended to Izquierdo on the pitch before he was rushed to an intensive care unit, where he remained until his passing.
