In a similar situation, Paul Pogba will also not feature ahead of a potential departure from the club.

Manchester United play Crystal Palace at 16.00 on Sunday, needing a win to guarantee they finish above West Ham in sixth, which would ensure the club qualifies for the Europa League.

Ronaldo, 37, has had his season interrupted by several short-term problems, missing games in January and March with hip flexor trouble. Nevertheless, he will end the 2021-22 season as United’s top scorer, having scored 18 goals in 30 Premier League appearances.

Yesterday, incoming United manager Erik ten Hag said “I can’t wait to work with him” when asked about his plans for the forward next season.

While this is Ronaldo’s final club match of the season, Portugal begin their Nations League campaign against Iberian rivals Spain on June 2, before another match against Switzerland three days later.

Ronaldo is international football’s all-time leading goal scorer with 115 goals in 186 games.

Pogba’s absence could mean that the youth academy product has played his final game for the club. Having rejoined United from Juventus in 2016, the 29-year-old has since made over 150 appearances.
